Breitenbush Hot Springs
Clothing-Optional Retreat in the Oregon Cascades
"Oregon's most beloved backcountry hot springs — hand-hewn cedar tubs deep in the Mt. Hood National Forest."
Bagby Hot Springs is one of Oregon's most iconic and beloved backcountry hot springs experiences. Located in the Mt. Hood National Forest, the springs require a 1.5-mile hike through old-growth forest to reach two historic bathhouses filled with hand-hewn old-growth cedar tubs. The spring water emerges at 136°F and is cooled to comfortable soaking temperatures by mixing with cold creek water. The entire experience — the forest hike, the cedar tubs, the sound of the creek — is deeply restorative.
Bagby Hot Springs has been a destination for Oregonians since the 1800s. The current bathhouses were built by volunteers in the 1970s using salvaged old-growth cedar. A fire in 2020 damaged the upper bathhouse but it has since been rebuilt. The Friends of Bagby organization maintains the site in partnership with the USFS.
Three large hand-hewn old-growth cedar round tubs in the upper bathhouse, fed directly by the hot spring.
Five long cedar trough-style tubs in the lower bathhouse, temperature adjustable by mixing cold creek water.
Reservations are now required and fill up weeks in advance — book as soon as the reservation window opens. Arrive at the trailhead early even with a reservation. The hike through old-growth Douglas fir is part of the magic. Bring a headlamp for evening soaks.
Bagby Hot Springs exceeded every expectation. The water temperature was perfect and the setting is stunning. We arrived early to beat the crowds — highly recommend doing the same.
Loved the mineral pools and the views. It does get crowded on Saturday afternoons so try to go mid-week if you can. Staff was friendly and the facilities were clean.
