"Colorado's Most Spectacular Backcountry Hot Springs"
Conundrum Hot Springs sits at 11,200 feet in the Elk Mountains near Aspen — the highest elevation hot springs in the continental United States. Reaching them requires a 17-mile round-trip hike through some of Colorado's most dramatic alpine scenery. The reward is two natural pools at 100°F surrounded by 14,000-foot peaks, wildflower meadows, and complete wilderness. Permits are required and limited to preserve the experience.
These springs have been known to locals for generations but became famous in the 1970s when the Aspen area saw a backpacking boom. The Forest Service now strictly limits access to protect the fragile alpine ecosystem.
Larger pool with best mountain views
Slightly cooler, more sheltered
Permits sell out months in advance. Set a Recreation.gov alert for cancellations — they appear frequently in the 2-week window before your desired date.
Conundrum Hot Springs exceeded every expectation. The water temperature was perfect and the setting is stunning. We arrived early to beat the crowds — highly recommend doing the same.
Loved the mineral pools and the views. It does get crowded on Saturday afternoons so try to go mid-week if you can. Staff was friendly and the facilities were clean.
